Shimizu Cruise Port: The Complete Guide (2026)
Shimizu — officially the Port of Shimizu in Shizuoka City — is the closest cruise port in Japan to Mt. Fuji, and one of the country’s top-ten busiest cruise calls (105 calls in 2025, over 90% of them international ships). Celebrity, Princess, Norwegian, Cunard and Viking all call here regularly. Here is what actually matters when you walk off the gangway.
The two piers (this matters)
Most ships dock at Hinode Pier, a 10-minute walk from the Dream Plaza bayfront and 8 minutes from the fish market. Walking out is easy and pleasant.
On busy days with two ships in port, one may be assigned to Okitsu Pier — a container terminal where walking out is not permitted. If your ship is at Okitsu, you must use the shuttle, a taxi, or a ship’s tour. Check your daily program the night before; it changes the whole shape of your day.
Getting away from the pier
- On foot: Dream Plaza 10 min, Kashi-no-Ichi fish market 8 min, Verkehr Museum 5 min.
- Free shuttle: usually runs between the pier and JR Shimizu Station — but historically it has not started until mid-morning on some calls. Don’t build a tight plan around it.
- Water Bus: the sleeper hit. ~15 minutes across the harbor to Miho no Matsubara for ¥800.
- Taxi: Nihondaira in 20–25 min (~¥3,500). Agree return pickups in advance — taxis do not cruise for fares at viewpoints.
Money, Wi-Fi, essentials
The welcome terminal has free Wi-Fi and volunteer guides with maps. Cards work at Dream Plaza and most restaurants; small market stalls prefer cash — a 7-Eleven ATM (international cards) is en route to the market. Konbini onigiri makes a fine gangway-side snack run.
How to think about your hours
Our whole site is organized around one question: how many hours do you actually have? Take your all-aboard time, subtract 60 minutes of safety margin, and pick a plan that fits:
- 2–3 hours → Walkable Shimizu
- ~4 hours (afternoon arrival) → The Afternoon Plan
- ~5 hours → Miho no Matsubara
- 6+ hours → Nihondaira & Kunozan Toshogu
