Yes, you can fit a real Japanese hot-spring bath into a Shimizu port day — ¥1,980 with towels included and a free shuttle. But read the tattoo rules first.

Somewhere between the fish market and the ropeway, a lot of passengers have the same thought: we’re in Japan — shouldn’t we be doing the hot-spring thing? You can, from this port, without a tour. But the briefing has to start with the rule that catches Western cruisers off guard.

Read this first: the tattoo rule

Japanese public baths are communal, naked, and historically strict about tattoos — and the bathhouses within reach of Shimizu are no exception. We checked the current policies directly:

  • Suruga Kenko Land: “guests with irezumi or tattoos are refused entry” — stated flat out in the house rules.
  • Mochimune Minato Onsen: bathing refused for tattooed guests.
  • Ekichika Onsen Kuroshio (Yaizu): restrictions on tattoos of any size, including fake tattoos, stickers and body paint.

There is no negotiating this at the front desk, and a small ankle piece counts. If you’re tattooed, the workable versions of a Japan bath are a private rental bath (kashikiri-buro) booked ahead at a ryokan, or an onsen town elsewhere on your itinerary known for tattoo-friendly houses. Everyone else: carry on, the water’s excellent.

The pick: Suruga Kenko Land, Okitsu

The closest serious bathhouse to your gangway is a gloriously unpretentious one: Suruga Kenko Land, a 24-hour bathing complex on the shoreline at Okitsu — technically still Shimizu ward — where the windows look straight out over Suruga Bay.

The numbers, verified on the operator’s pages:

Admission (adult)¥1,980, towels, shampoo and razors included — arrive empty-handed
Admission (child)¥990 (age 3 to elementary school)
Baths~16 types across the men’s and women’s floors — natural hot spring, a “sea-air” brine bath, carbonated bath, jet and lying baths
Saunas5 types, from a 39–40°C salt sauna to a stone sauna running as hot as 104°C
HoursAround the clock (short cleaning closures: women 3:00–4:00, men 4:00–5:00)
ViewSuruga Bay, right there

Getting there is the pleasant surprise: a free shuttle runs from JR Shimizu Station roughly hourly, 8:05 to 22:05, arriving about 25 minutes later; return buses leave the facility hourly from 7:30 to 21:30. Alternatively it’s one local stop on the JR line to Okitsu Station and a 15-minute walk. Either way, from Hinode Pier you’re looking at about three hours door-to-door for an unhurried soak — which is why this is a 6-hour-plus-call move, not a squeeze-it-in one.

The stylish alternative: Mochimune Minato Onsen

If your day already points toward Shizuoka City, the modern option is Mochimune Minato Onsen in the little fishing port of Mochimune, a few stops down the line past Shizuoka. It’s newer and sleeker than Kenko Land: ¥1,000 on weekdays, ¥1,200 weekends, open 10:00–24:00 (from 9:00 on weekends). The catch for travellers: towels are rentals here — ¥500 for the set — and the journey is longer from the pier, so treat it as a add-on to a Shizuoka half day rather than a destination of its own. (Yaizu’s station-front Ekichika Onsen Kuroshio — from ¥480 for a one-hour course — is further still, and best left to overnighting Viking passengers with time to burn.)

Two-minute etiquette course

The rules are simple and identical everywhere: wash and rinse thoroughly at the seated showers before entering any tub; no swimwear, ever — bathing is naked, in separate men’s and women’s floors; your small towel stays out of the water (fold it on your head like everyone else); tie long hair up; and keep the volume at a murmur. Tubs are for soaking, not scrubbing. That’s the whole exam — nobody expects a foreigner to be perfect, but the pre-wash is the one that matters.

The timing maths

Count backwards, as with everything at this port: shuttle out (~25 min) + a 90-minute soak-and-rest + shuttle back (~25 min) + the pier–station leg on both ends comes to roughly three hours. On an 8-hour call that stacks neatly on top of a fish-market lunch; on a 5-hour call it is the day — decide whether that trade is you. And carry the return in cash-adjacent certainty: the last practical shuttle back leaves well before evening all-aboards, so note the hourly times when you get on.

First call at Shimizu? The complete port guide covers the basics, and the plans by hours ashore show where a bath fits.

Prices and hours verified on the operators’ official pages, September 2026: Suruga Kenko Land (kur-hotel.co.jp/suruga), Mochimune Minato Onsen (minato-onsen.jp). Policies — including tattoo rules — are the operators’ own and can change; the front desk has the final word.

Quick answers

Questions this raises

Is there an onsen near Shimizu cruise port?

Yes. The closest full-scale bathhouse is Suruga Kenko Land in Okitsu — still inside Shimizu ward — with about 16 baths and 5 saunas overlooking Suruga Bay, open around the clock, ¥1,980 for adults with towels and toiletries included. A free shuttle runs roughly hourly from JR Shimizu Station.

Can you use a Japanese onsen if you have tattoos?

At the bathhouses reachable from Shimizu, no — Suruga Kenko Land, Mochimune Minato Onsen and Yaizu's Ekichika Onsen Kuroshio all state that guests with tattoos (of any size, including stickers and body paint at some) are refused. This is standard at Japanese public baths. If you're tattooed, your realistic options are a private rental bath arranged ahead at a ryokan, or saving the onsen for a tattoo-friendly facility elsewhere in Japan.

How much does an onsen visit cost near Shimizu?

Suruga Kenko Land: ¥1,980 for adults, towels, shampoo and razors included — you can genuinely arrive empty-handed. Mochimune Minato Onsen: ¥1,000 weekdays / ¥1,200 weekends, but towels are extra (¥500 for the set). Children pay roughly half at Kenko Land and ¥350 at Mochimune.

Does an onsen fit a cruise call at Shimizu?

On calls of about 6 hours or more, yes. Budget three hours door to door for Suruga Kenko Land: the free shuttle leaves JR Shimizu Station hourly (8:05–22:05), the ride is about 25 minutes, and return buses run hourly until 21:30 — or it's one train stop to Okitsu plus a 15-minute walk. On short calls, skip it; a rushed bath defeats the point.

Is there a day-use onsen within walking distance of Shimizu port?

Not within walking distance of the pier, but close. The nearest full-scale bathhouse is Suruga Kenko Land at Okitsu, still inside Shimizu ward: about 16 baths and 5 saunas overlooking Suruga Bay, open around the clock, ¥1,980 for adults with towels, shampoo and razors included. A free shuttle leaves JR Shimizu Station roughly hourly (8:05 to 22:05) and takes about 25 minutes, or it is one train stop to Okitsu plus a 15-minute walk. Budget about three hours door to door, and note that tattooed guests are refused.
