Three things that catch people out
- Taxis are per car. ¥3,500 to Nihondaira is the same whether one person gets in or four. Split it and the expensive day stops being expensive.
- No taxis wait at the viewpoints. Book the round trip or agree a pickup time before you get out — see the full Nihondaira guide.
- Cash still matters. Cards work at the malls, restaurants and the ropeway; market stalls often do not take them. The Seven Bank ATM at Dream Plaza (2F, 10:00–24:00) accepts international cards.
Prices are quoted in yen because that is what you will be charged. They are the figures we have verified on the ground and keep current across this site — but fares and entry prices do change, so treat them as planning numbers rather than quotations. Questions about cost
How much does a day in Shimizu cost without a ship’s tour?
A walkable day costs about ¥1,500–3,500 per person — that is a tuna bowl and a souvenir, with no transport at all. Adding the water bus to Miho no Matsubara brings it to roughly ¥3,500 per person. The Nihondaira taxi day is the expensive one: about ¥7,000 per car for the return taxi, plus about ¥1,950 per person for the ropeway-and-shrine ticket.
How much is a taxi from Shimizu cruise port?
To Nihondaira Yume Terrace it is about ¥3,500 per car each way, taking 20–25 minutes. Fares are per car, not per person, so a group of four splits the same meter. No taxis wait at the viewpoints, so book the round trip or agree a pickup time before you get out.
How much is the water bus to Miho no Matsubara?
¥1,000 per person for one leg, or ¥1,800 for the full harbour loop. It takes about 25 minutes outbound and about 15 minutes on the direct leg back.
Is a ship’s shore excursion worth it at Shimizu?
A ship’s Mt. Fuji tour typically runs from about US$150 a head. The same ground done independently costs roughly ¥12,000 for a couple. The ship’s tour buys you a guaranteed return to the vessel, not better sights — which is why it makes sense on short calls and at Okitsu Pier, and rarely otherwise.
Do you need cash in Shimizu, or do cards work?
Cards are fine at the malls, restaurants and the ropeway. Carry cash for market stalls and small shops. The Seven Bank ATM at Dream Plaza (2F, 10:00–24:00) accepts international cards.
