Viking in Shimizu: The Only Overnight of the Season
Every other ship this season gives Shimizu a day. Viking Venus gives it a night — alongside from 08:00 on 29 September 2026 to 13:00 the following afternoon, the only overnight call of the year, and the only chance any passenger gets to see what this port is like after the tour buses leave. Viking Orion follows with a conventional day call on 18 October.

Both ships carry about 930 guests — small enough that Hinode Pier absorbs them without queues, and small enough that you’ll have the water bus mostly to yourselves.
How to spend the overnight: split it like a local
Day one is for the mountain — if it shows. Check Fuji from deck on arrival. Clear? Commit immediately to the big view: taxi to Nihondaira, ropeway down to Kunozan Toshogu, back by mid-afternoon. Hazy? Don’t burn the day chasing it — do walkable Shimizu and the fish market, and bank the mountain for tomorrow’s dawn. Either way you’re operating with a luxury no one else gets here: a second chance.
The evening is the actual prize. Shimizu’s own dinner scene is quiet, so take the train eleven minutes into Shizuoka City and eat the thing this prefecture actually eats at night: Shizuoka oden — skewers simmered in a jet-black beef-stock broth, dusted with dried-fish powder — in the lantern-lit alleys of Aoba Yokocho and Aoba Oden Gai. Counters seat eight or ten; point, smile, and drink what the person next to you is drinking. No all-aboard time. That sentence has never before been true at this port.
Day two, 06:00–08:00, is your Fuji insurance window. The mountain is clearest at exactly the hour most cruise days can’t use — and you’ll be alongside for it, coffee in hand. Keep day two pier-side, though: with a 13:00 departure, the water bus doesn’t fit (the morning boat’s 12:35 return from Miho lands you at Hinode about 12:50 — no margin at all). The bayfront, Dream Plaza as it opens, and the market’s morning stalls are the right radius. Check your programme’s exact all-aboard the night before and do the maths backwards.
Orion’s day call
Orion’s 18 October date sits at the peak of autumn Fuji season. Times aren’t published yet; when they land, read the day by its departure hour the same way we read Norwegian Jade’s calls — 17:00+ means Nihondaira fits, anything earlier means walkable-plus-water-bus.
