Nihondaira from Shimizu Port by Taxi: Times, Prices, the Ropeway
Every cruise line sells a “Mt. Fuji viewpoint” excursion out of Shimizu. Almost all of them go to the same place: Nihondaira, the 300-metre plateau above the port. Here is exactly how to do it yourself — every fare, every timing, and the one arrangement that makes or breaks the day.
What’s up there
Two things, joined by a five-minute ropeway:
- Nihondaira / Yume Terrace — the plateau’s summit area and its Kengo Kuma-designed observation terrace: Mt. Fuji across the bay on one side, Suruga Bay and your own ship below on the other, tea fields all around. Terrace entry is free, and there’s a café for a cup of local tea with the view.
- Kunozan Toshogu — down the seaward ridge by ropeway, the original burial shrine of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu: a National Treasure in lacquer and gold, older than its famous sibling in Nikko.

A couple sharing the taxi does the whole route for roughly ¥6,000–7,000 per person less than half a typical ship’s tour — and sees the identical view and shrine. (The full excursion-vs-DIY maths lives here.)
Ropeway hours matter: first car down from the Nihondaira side 9:10, last car back up from Kunozan 17:00 — and on a port-day clock you should be on it well before that. Note for winter readers: the ropeway closes for maintenance 1–21 December 2026.
The one mistake that ruins this trip
Letting your taxi drive away. There is no taxi rank on the plateau, and drivers do not cruise up there hoping for fares. Before you get out: book the round trip, or agree a pickup time and show the driver your all-aboard time written down. Drivers here see cruise passengers weekly — they understand exactly what that number means. Everything else about this day is easy; this is the part people get wrong.
How it fits your hours
- Plateau + ropeway + shrine + photos is a comfortable 4–5 hours door to door — it fits any call of about 6 hours or more, with the full timed version in our Nihondaira & Kunozan itinerary.
- Short on time? Skip the shrine, do the terrace only: 2.5–3 hours door to door.
- Mornings only for the mountain. Fuji is clearest 06:00–08:00 and fades into haze after midday — the odds, honestly. Check the live camera before you commit the taxi fare; the plateau is still pleasant without the summit, but you should choose it knowingly.
- Steps warning: beyond the ropeway station, Kunozan’s grounds involve roughly 250 stone steps. Magnificent — but plan around knees and hips.
