Things to do in Shimizu: what to know
What is there to do in Shimizu, Japan?
On foot from the cruise pier: S-Pulse Dream Plaza with its sushi alley, the waterfront park with a free Mt. Fuji view, and the Verkehr port museum (8–12 minutes); the Kashi-no-Ichi tuna market is 20–25 minutes along the waterfront, next to JR Shimizu Station. A ¥1,000 water bus reaches the Miho no Matsubara pine grove in 25 minutes. A taxi reaches the Nihondaira plateau and Kunozan Toshogu shrine in 20–25 minutes. Shizuoka City, with Sunpu Castle, is 11 minutes by train.
What can you do in Shimizu in one day?
On a full day ashore the standard shape is: a tuna bowl at the market in the morning, the water bus to Miho no Matsubara or a taxi up to Nihondaira in the middle of the day, and sushi or shopping at Dream Plaza before all-aboard. Longer calls can add Shizuoka City by train, or the Fuji foothills at Fujinomiya.
What is there to do in Shimizu port without a tour?
Almost all of it. Dream Plaza, the sushi alley and the waterfront are walkable from Hinode Pier with no transport at all; the market is a longer walk or a short shuttle ride. The water bus and taxis cover everything else. A ship’s tour mainly buys a guaranteed return to the vessel — useful on short calls and at Okitsu Pier, rarely otherwise.
What is there to do in Shimizu when it rains?
The tuna market is roofed, Sushi Yokocho and Dream Plaza are indoors, and the Verkehr Museum by the pier costs ¥400. In Shizuoka City the Toro Ruins museum works too. Rain cancels the Fuji views and can suspend the water bus, but it does not cancel the day.
How far is Shimizu cruise port from the town?
The waterfront is right there: Dream Plaza is about 10 minutes on foot from Hinode Pier. The older town centre, the fish market and JR Shimizu Station are 20–30 minutes on foot, or about 5 minutes by the free cruise-day shuttle or a taxi. Only Okitsu Pier, used on some two-ship days, prohibits walking out.
