Step-Free Shimizu Tour: Nihondaira, a Temple & Miho
The tour I recommend to anyone who finds steps hard: the Nihondaira view, a temple with its own Fuji view, and Miho — all by car, no ropeway.
It starts by the cruise terminal — no transport needed
- The operator designed it specifically for people who cannot do Kunozan's stairs or do not like ropeways.
- Same trusted operator as our top-rated Shimizu tour; 20+ reviews across the vehicle sizes, all 5.0.
- Nihondaira Yume Terrace, the Ochakaikan tea field view, Ryuge-ji temple (a national natural treasure tree) and Miho's pine grove and museum.
- Licensed English guide and private driver; choose sedan, van or small bus by party size.
Travellers with limited mobility, grandparents, and anyone who wants a gentle four hours.
Ryuge-ji charges a small admission paid on the day. It is step-light rather than fully wheelchair-graded everywhere — ask the operator about your chair when you book.
What the day is
A licensed English guide and a private driver take you up to Nihondaira: the Yume Terrace observatory for the 360° view of Fuji, the port and the Izu Peninsula, and the Ochakaikan tea house, where the tea field frames the mountain. Then Ryuge-ji, a small Edo-period temple with a famous sago-palm garden and its own view of Fuji, and finally Miho no Matsubara — the pine grove, the black-sand beach and the Miho culture centre — before the drive back to the pier.
Why a local would pick this one
Kunozan Toshogu is wonderful and it is up 250 stone steps; the ropeway worries some people too. This tour keeps the views and drops the climbing, and it comes from the operator with the best record at this port. It is the one I would book for my own parents.
