Why we send people here

Nihondaira is the plateau that everyone at Shimizu cruise port ends up asking about. It rises to about 300 metres on the Udo Hills between the port and central Shizuoka, and it is the single spot within half an hour of your gangway where Mt. Fuji, Suruga Bay, the tea hills and the Izu Peninsula all line up at once. It is a designated national place of scenic beauty, and it has been photographed for that view for a century.

For a cruise passenger, Nihondaira is really four things stacked on one hill.

What is actually up there

  • Nihondaira Yume Terrace — the observatory designed by Kengo Kuma (outdoor corridor free; building ¥100 from 1 October 2026), with a 360° deck and a café. Open 9:00–17:00 (to 21:00 on Saturdays), closed the 2nd Tuesday of the month.
  • The Nihondaira Ropeway — a five-minute cable car that drops off the ridge to Kunozan Toshogu, about ¥1,250 return.
  • Kunozan Toshogu — Tokugawa Ieyasu’s original burial shrine, a National Treasure in lacquer and gold, at the bottom of the ropeway. Roughly 250 stone steps inside the grounds.
  • The tea hills — Nihondaira’s slopes are working tea fields, and the view down over them towards the bay is the reason the plateau appears on so many Shizuoka posters.

Getting there from the cruise pier

A taxi from Hinode Pier takes 20–25 minutes and costs about ¥3,500 each way. There is no direct public bus from the cruise terminal.

The rule that catches people out: no taxis wait at the top. The plateau is a scenic road with a car park, not a rank. Either book the driver for the round trip, or agree a pickup time and take their card before you get out. Passengers who assume they will flag one down at the terrace have missed all-aboard over it.

How long to allow

What you doTime on the hillTotal from the pier
Yume Terrace only~1 hour~2 hours
Terrace + ropeway + Kunozan Toshogu~3 hours~4 hours
Add the tea hills and a stop in Shizuoka city~4 hours~6 hours

If your call is shorter than about five hours ashore, the terrace-only version is the one that fits. For anything longer, the ropeway down to Kunozan is what makes the trip worth the fare.

Is it worth it if Fuji is hiding?

Partly. The bay, the tea hills and the Izu Peninsula are still there, and Kunozan Toshogu is a National Treasure regardless of the weather. But if the mountain is the whole reason you are going, check the live camera first — Fuji shows clearly about three or four days out of ten, and the odds are best early.

Why it earns the hours
  • Free to visit; ropeway ~¥1,250 return — the best value on a port day.
  • English: English panels at Yume Terrace and the ropeway.
Before you count on it
  • Hours: Plateau always open; Yume Terrace 9:00–17:00.
  • About 2 hr 30 min door to door — a 2–3 hour stop cannot hold it.
  • It is a view, so it is weather. Check the morning sky before you commit the hours.

Asked about Nihondaira

Questions people send us

How do I get to Nihondaira from Shimizu cruise port?

Nihondaira is 20–25 min by taxi (~¥3,500) from Hinode Pier, where most cruise ships dock. Leave enough margin to be back on board at least 60 minutes before your ship departs.

How much does Nihondaira cost?

Free to visit; ropeway ~¥1,250 return. Prices can change — reconfirm on the day.

What is Nihondaira?

Nihondaira is a roughly 300-metre plateau on the Udo Hills, sitting between Shimizu port and central Shizuoka. It is a designated national place of scenic beauty, and it is the one place near the cruise port where you get Mt. Fuji, Suruga Bay, the tea hills and the Izu Peninsula in a single 360° sweep.

How do you get to Nihondaira from Shimizu cruise port?

By taxi: about 20–25 minutes and roughly ¥3,500 each way from Hinode Pier. There is no direct bus from the cruise terminal, and no taxis wait at the top — so fix a return pickup time with your driver, or book the car for the round trip, before you leave the port.

Is Nihondaira the same as Nihondaira Yume Terrace?

No. Nihondaira is the plateau; Nihondaira Yume Terrace is the Kengo Kuma–designed observatory on it — its outdoor viewing corridor is free, the building ¥100 from 1 October 2026 — open 9:00–17:00 (to 21:00 on Saturdays) and closed the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Most people who say 'Nihondaira' mean the terrace and the ropeway station beside it.

How long do you need at Nihondaira?

Allow about 1 hour on the plateau alone, or about 3 hours if you also take the ropeway down to Kunozan Toshogu and back. Add roughly 50 minutes of round-trip taxi time from the pier on top of that.

Can you see Mt. Fuji from Nihondaira?

On a clear day, yes — the full cone, with the bay in front of it. But the summit is only fully visible roughly 3–4 days out of 10, and mornings are clearest. Check the Shizuoka live camera before you commit ¥7,000 of taxi fare to the view.
