What five and a half hours is actually for
The trap on short calls is trying to shrink a full-day plan. Don’t. Pick one of these three mornings, all field-tested against a 13:00 gangway deadline:
1. The tuna morning (zero transport risk). Walk off at 07:30, bayfront stroll while the town wakes, Kashi-no-Ichi fish market from 09:30 — early bowls beat the queue that forms by 11:30 — souvenir tea and wasabi in Ichiba-kan, back aboard by 12:30 without once needing a vehicle. This is walkable Shimizu compressed, and it’s the plan we’d pick.
2. The Miho run (one boat each way, timed tight). The 9:55 water bus puts you at Miho about 10:30; walk 20 minutes to the pine grove and the beach where Fuji lines up over the bay; you must be on the 12:35 return — it’s direct, 15 minutes, gangway by 13:00. That leaves about 75 minutes at the grove: enough for the view and the shrine road, not enough to linger. Only choose this if your all-aboard is genuinely 13:00, not earlier — and carry cash, the Miho pier sells tickets on board only.
3. The private half-loop. A four-hour private van or sedan from the gangway at 08:00 covers Nihondaira’s panorama and Kunozan Toshogu and returns you by noon — the one way a hilltop Fuji view fits this call, because a private driver waits and a taxi rank doesn’t.
What doesn’t fit: Shizuoka City (the train works, but the castle town deserves hours you don’t have), Gotemba outlets, and any road-based Mt. Fuji tour — the maths is unforgiving on a 13:00 deadline.
